Wedding in September

Dear AoF:

For a wedding in the last of September is it 2 late 2 wear aqua 2piece
dress with off white accessories ?

Signed,

AquaGirl

Dear AquaGirl:

I would say that early September would be okay but late September
requires a little darker look. It is possible to wear the aqua 2 piece
dress with a darker sweater, shawl or jacket and dark shoes - possibly
navy or black solid accessories could take it into more of a fall look.

Simply Mad about Alice in Wonderland

Dear AoF:

I am looking for a dress like these for my Alice in Wonderland sweet 16
next year. I would like something grand but preferably not too long so
it doesn't get dirty! Here is the kind of thing i'm looking for:

Signed Alice in Where Do I Find It Land

Dear Alice,

What a fun question. And coincidentally, I have just designed my own
version of French Maid vs. Little House on the Prairie vs. Alice in Wonderland"
dress. It's not long, though and it's a kind of a pinafore. And also, Alice in
Wonderland, the movie is coming next spring!

So, I'm excited to see if I can help you find your dream Sweet 16 dress.

I found a cute site, http://www.lacarmina.com/, but it doesn't appear
that the shopping area is active at the moment. You might want to check
again to see if it comes back up. I would also check:

http://tiny.cc/zoomA .  This corset is white
with black lacing

or for a sweeter look:

I also found a wonderful site for corsets and corset dresses. It looks like
it would probably be pretty expensive but worth a look.

http://www.darkgarden.com/gallery.asp

There are these, which aren't too expensive (as far as corsets go):

Finding the skirt to go with it may be difficult, especially at a decent price.

Here's a DIY way and inexpensive way to do this look but it will take some
work and imagination on your part and possibly help from a good sewer
to complete:

You can buy a corset rather inexpensively from a lingerie site such as
Victoria's Secret. Just look up the word corset on their site. You can add
details such as bows or appliques by hand-sewing them onto the corset.

For the long skirt and bustle, go to a place like Goodwill and look in the
bridal section. Be prepared to shorten the length and pull up extra fabric
to create a bustle if you like. Add an over fabric bought from a local fabric
store to coordinate with the corset.A decent sewer can do all of this pretty
easily and not too expensively.

If you have more questions about how to accomplish this look, feel free
to contact us again.

Thanks for such a fun question!

Yours,

Mellow Yellow...Shoes!

Dear AoF:

I just bought a great pair of Aldo yellow pumps. Can I wear them with
a beige/neutral top and a beige & black skirt?

Signed, They Call Me Mellow Yellow

Dear Mellow Yellow:

I believe it depends on how bright the yellow is. If the pair is kind of a
mellow yellow, then I think it should work great with the beige and black.
If they're a bright yellow, it might be iffy and you might want to go with
a brighter color, like red with black or simply red or simply black.

For pale yellow shoes: Try, tans, browns, pale greens, pale blues, black,
grey, off white and various shades of red.

For bright yellow shoes: You can go with black and white, black and red,
red, black, and perhaps navy blue. If you go into intense purple or green,
then you risk going into '80's looks which could be good or not be so good
depending on how much attention you want from your look and how
fashion forward you are.

And since you bought yellow shoes, it sounds like you are! We love
that here...

Teal Top with Which Jeans?

Dear AdviceonFashion.com:

I got this super cute bright teal shirt to wear to work, I wear it with black
dress pants. But I wanted to wear it with jeans, but not sure what shade
of jeans will look okay with it!?

Signed, Gotta Have My Brights

Dear Gotta Have It,

I would wear it with either unfaded dark or black jeans. Since it's bright, it
needs to have a strong color to coordinate on the bottom.

Thanks for asking AdviceonFashion.com.

Black to a Wedding

Dear Advice on Fashion:

I live in Denver but we are traveling to Illinois for my nephews
wedding on Aug 1st. I am full figure so I would like to wear a simple knee
length black dress. Is it ok to wear black to a summer wedding? I am
so perplexed. For slimming effects I only feel comfortable in black, I have
not been home in over 4 years and have put on a lot of weight. Will I look
out of place? It is a noon Catholic mass wedding with a reception at 5:00 pm.
So far I have silver shoes and a silver wrap in an attempt to lighten up the
black so it does not look like I am going to a funeral!!!

Am I on the right track? Is a mesh metallic wrap too formal for a daytime
wedding? Should I save it for the evening reception? I've never met the
family so I am nervous about making a good impression. I choose silver
because their colors are blue and silver. I tried to find a navy blue dress
but with out any luck decided to wear my fav little black dress that I always
feel great in. Thanks!

Signed To Goth or not to Goth

Dear Goth or not to Goth,

I think it's okay to wear a black dress for a wedding. There was a time
when black was considered a total no-no for weddings but things have
changed. But you are right that you should lighten it up a little. If your
dress has long sleeves, it may be too dark for a wedding. Short sleeves
or a sleeveless dress is ideal. Since I understand your need to feel
comfortable and you feel that black is most flattering, I would go with that.

In the future, there are other colors to consider. Brown, grey, navy blue
are a few. But, if you learn to accept your beauty in a different way, you
can also wear red, purple, green, blue, etc. Deeper colors and jewel tones
would probably all look good.

Wearing a shawl or light jacket will also work. The silver shawl, if it's sheer
enough will probably also work for daytime since it is a formal occasion.
You might also consider wearing a shawl with intense color, such as a fuchsia
with floral embroidery or even a silk shantung shawl in a bright color, such
as chartreuse or even burnt orange. Choose your favorite color or a color
that you know you look good in. It is not necessary to match the bridal
colors unless you are a part of the wedding party.

You can wear black or even the silver shoes with any of these colors.

Thank you very much for asking AdviceonFashion.com and have a
wonderful time at the wedding!

Maxi Dresses

Dear Advice on Fashion,

With the new long length summer dresses in style I can't decide
if I should hem them. I got two from Express. Are they supposed to
kind of touch the ground?

Signed, I'll Go to Any Length for Fashion
Dear I'll Go to Any Length,
If you take a look at fashion magazines and see how they're
wearing them, you'll see that they usually rest anywhere from
the ankles to the bottom of the foot. I particularly like it when
it hits about midway between the ankle and the bottom of the
foot. In a high fashion spread, you'll see them hitting the floor -
which makes for a dramatic photograph and looks great on a
tall model, but will be a pain for you walking in real life. You
can trip and find it difficult to maneuver stairs, etc.

Keep in mind what shoes you'll be wearing the most with this
dress. I mostly see little thong sandals but once again, I love
platform sandals with this look. For women below the height
of about 5' 5", you can keep the length and also appear taller
and create an elegant and trendy or funky look all in one.

Also, the height of your shoe will convey whether you're relaxed
and casual or a trying to make more of a statement. High heels
or platforms inevitably will slow you down but sometimes the
look is worth it.

Generally, as a rule of thumb for long dresses, skirts or pants,
wear whatever shoes you will be wearing the most with the garment
and then have the dress altered to hit about midway on the sole of
your shoe or at least an inch up from the floor.
