Learning how to wear accessories is some of the best clothing
advice you can get. Sometimes it's not the clothing tips you need as much as accessories advice. You can learn to accessorize
your outfits to suit your mood or to suit a particular style you want to achieve. This page will give you some expert clothing
fashion advice that requires minimum input but achieves maximum output. "How Do I Achieve That Look?" Accessories probably reflect who we are more
than our basic wardrobe. For instance, let's say you have a basic black dress to accessorize. The dress is simple, sleeveless,
just above the knee with no outstanding details.

Now let's say that 3 different women want to wear this same dress. Depending on the choice of
scarf or earrings, suddenly the dress, in fact the whole ensemble, takes on the personality of the wearer. One woman wears her grandmother's
antique gold locket layered with other chains. Another wears a colorful scarf she was given from a friend for her birthday.
The last woman pairs it with black stockings, a scarf worn on her head Jackie O style, and big black sunglasses. Same dress,
but the accessories reflected each woman's style. Accessories communicate a lot. Now let's talk about some accessory ideas to
consider in your own wardrobe for 2008:
|
Scarves, Hats and Jewelry can be a lot of fun
|
|
1. SCARVES are hot, hot, hot. Long, skinny ones are particularly great right now and they can be worn in
so many ways. Consider chiffon, knitted scarves or prints.
Scarves
are Chic
· How do you
tie a scarf, you ask? Double it and loop it through. Hang it forward, then back. Hang it back then forward. Tie it in a bow.
Tie it low. Tie it in your pony tail. Tie it rich-hippie style, over the top of your head and hanging down your shoulders.
Use it as a belt, over a skirt or dress, or through your jean belt loops. Play, play, play.
A big scarf can be
worn as a skirt or sarong.

Gloves and Belts can completely
change your look

2. HATS
Hats are going strong. Fedoras, Cadets, and Cloches are three to try. Floppy hats a la Ali Magraw
in Love Story are coming.
3. JEWELRY: · Try fun little charms hanging from delicate or fat chains. Hoops are classic
and most women can use a pair of hoops as a basic in their wardrobe. Diamond post earrings are great for a lady-like
look. A nice pearl choker can come in handy for formal occasions. Rings - wear big ones for a rock-n-roll look. Bracelets - layer a lot of them.
|
|
4. GLOVES:
· If
you want to look supremely retro chic, match your gloves to your shoes. Very fabulous!!!
|
Stockings, Glasses, and Bags
are important accessories too
|
|
|
5.
BELTS: Belts are a great way to accentuate figure assets or to draw away the eye from things you don't want to emphasize.
· Small waist? Wear it cinched
tight at your waist. Wide belts are good. Long torso? Wear it higher, at your natural waist or even wear belts just below
your bustline. Short torso? Wear it lower, at your hipbone
Feel like you want to hide a slightly portruding
stomach? Wear a soft scarf, knotted in front and hanging over your tummy. People see the belt and don't notice your stomach.
Try wearing a few belts at a time, one above the other. Wear a long necklace as a belt.
|
|
6. STOCKINGS:
· Black, opaque
pantyhose are a great way to bring an outfit together, as well as making the legs appear longer and thinner. Opaque pantyhose
in bright colors can make your legs bigger and make you look shorter but they are fashionable and add a lot to the flexibility
of your wardrobe.
Beige pantyhose should be avoided almost always in regular everyday wear. Of course, for
the office, you might not be able to get out of it. This is a strong bias I have, but beige-colored pantyhose almost always
looks like beige-colored pantyhose. It is possible to get very clear pantyhose but you might as well show your real legs in
that case. Pantyhose usually looks pretty bad with sandals - unless you're intentionally going for a rebellious look.
Real stockings worn with a garter belt: If you feel comfortable and love this look, we salute you!

7. GLASSES/SUNGLASSES ·
Bring
a couple of friends with you when choosing eyeglasses. As with buying jeans and swimming suits, you need a few other sets
of eyes to help you choose the right frames. It's good to have two other opinions since one friend could have a strong
opinion that actually doesn't make sense for you.
The right pair of sunglasses can make you look very stylish
- even if you're wearing a sweat suit. Right now, the larger the sunglasses, the darker the lenses, the better.
For day, if you walk outside with only one accessory, choose your sunglasses. For night, if you walk out with only one accessory, choose
earrings and lipstick.
What about bags and shoes?

|
8.
BAGS · Right now, large bags
are in but one of the nice things about bags is that there's room (pun intended) to wear a large bag one day and a small
one the next. Some women are bag fiends, with dozens of bags in their closets and you know who you are.
A few styles
that come in handy in a practical sense are an over-the-shoulder, a messenger bag, a dressy bag (possibly a clutch) and an
old-school handbag. Of course, if you buy all your bags in black or brown depending on your basics preference, you can mix
and match with most outfits. For fun, try a red bag which is one of my favorites right now. Red can be a basic, surprisingly!
Backpacks are for backpacking, use them then but otherwise, leave the backpacks at home, even the expensive leather
ones, if you want to be in style for 2008.

9. SHOES · The variety of shoes
that are available out in the shopping world is overwhelming but basically think of shoes in these categories. Sometimes two
categories can come together in one shoe:
Sandals - Generally good for casual events.
Flats - Lovely
with little skirts or dresses, they generally evoke a 50's-ish gamine feel. They are also great with straight-leg pants.
Avoid boot-cut pants with flats. Buy a few pairs in different colors to expand your wardrobe options immensely. Petite women
can look great in flats, just make sure that your ensemble is also proportionately small.
High Heels- Of course,
they make you look taller and thinner. They also can give you confidence for a business meeting or need to deal with a situation
or people where you need to gain more power. For business situations, make sure you can walk in them easily. High heels are
also very sexy. Mobility is less important for that look but be able to walk gracefully even though you might be
walking a little slower. Whoever originally came up with the expression "Sometimes you have to suffer for fashion"
probably had high heels in mind.

|
Platforms - Once a style that only showed up every generation, they are now becoming
a staple for the funky, downtown girl. Some women just can't get enough of platforms for several reasons. Talk about funky
- platform shoes are the epitome of funky. If you're looking for elegant, they don't need apply. But they can be sexy
and they can create more height than regular high heels. Also, they can be comfortable since your toes and heels are basically
at the same height. Be careful with wood soles, though, if you knock your other foot with the side of a wood sole, it can
be quite painful.
Boots - With a high heel, they can give you lots of power and can even be practical for warm
in winter months. For 2008, ankle boots are the hottest or just below the knee. Gain even more fashion points if you have
an animal print boot.
Flat boots or boots with a smaller heel can also look nice but look for at least 2"
heels to coordinate with most outfits.
Slippers are for putzing around at home so we at AdviceonFashion leave that
up to you. Okay, give your poor tootsies a break from all these fashionable but usually uncomfortable shoes. Fluffy's
good.
Athletic shoes - Like backpacks, leave athletic shoes for athletic endeavors.
