Mona Lucero was born in San Francisco, California and raised in Grand Junction, Colorado. As a young child, her drawing talent led her to feel that she would one day be an artist. As a teenager, her mother and sister taught her to sew and she began making some of her own clothes.

After finishing high school, she attended the University of Colorado and received her Bachelor’s in Fine Arts in 1983 with specializations in Painting and Sculpture. During her senior year, she created her first textile installations and wearable art.

She then enrolled at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City and received an Associate’s Degree in Fashion Design in 1987.

When she returned to Denver, she worked for several apparel manufacturers - as an assistant patternmaker for Skea Clothing, a high-end skiwear line and designing for Gear 1/Gilbert Apparel, a better-priced women's activewear line. She also did technical specifications for Justus of Steamboat, a resort wear line.

In 1993, she began doing freelance design for Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Theatre, creating for various productions including "Make Me a River of Peace", Kevin Jeff's "Church of Nations", and painted costumes for "Sombra Y Sol" which features the life of Frida Kahlo. In addition, she designed and constructed costumes for various plays at El Centro Su Teatro, including the "The Miracle at Tepayac".

During this time, she began preparing to launch her wholesale line of clothing and bags. In 1993, she began selling her line to stores in Colorado, California, New Mexico and Russia.

In 2002, she opened her boutique, Mona Lucero Design, in its current location at 2544 15th Street. There she is currently carrying her clothing, accessories and bags in addition to other local and national designers and artists' works.

The shop reflects her continuing interest in the relationship of art and design. It has received awards such as Best Independent Boutique from Westword, Best Gift Shop from 5280 Magazine and One of the Best National Independent Boutiques in City Magazine (New York, New York). Her designs have been featured in La Voz Magazine, The Denver Post and the Rocky Mountain News, among other publications. In Spring 2007, she was chosen to compete as one of the city's 12 best designers for a fashion design contest called The Fashion Project at Tamarac Square.

In 2008, she was honored with the MasterMind Award in Design/Fashion from Westword Magazine.
