Mona Lucero was born in San Francisco,
California and raised in Grand Junction, Colorado. As a young child, her drawing talent led her to feel that she would one
day be an artist. As a teenager, her mother and sister taught her to sew and she began making some of her own clothes. After finishing high school, she attended the University of Colorado and received her Bachelor’s in Fine Arts in
1983 with specializations in Painting and Sculpture. During her senior year, she created her first textile installations and
wearable art. She then enrolled at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City and received an Associate’s
Degree in Fashion Design in 1987.
When she returned to Denver, she worked for several apparel manufacturers - as an assistant patternmaker
for Skea Clothing, a high-end skiwear line and designing for Gear 1/Gilbert Apparel, a better-priced women's activewear
line. She also did technical specifications for Justus of Steamboat, a resort wear line.
