How does one develop one's own style? There is no easy way - it takes time and some experimentation
and that's why we, at AdviceonFashion.com, encourage you to have fun and try something new by hinting at some style tips
that you can take and make your own.
Why
stick with one style?
Although your friends, family or partner may not tell you, if you've been sporting the same style for
more than a year, maybe it's time for a change. Change can, of course, be scary - what if someone makes a rude comment
or just hates it?
|
Here's a Key Style
Tip
|
|
Discover
your own style by observing women you admire
|
But here are some things to remember - you get to decide what you look like, not your boyfriend, mother or friend. If
you don't try, how do you know you won't look great? Everyone makes a fashion mistake sometime and, if you don't,
then it means that you're playing it safe, possibly too safe. You've found something that worked once and you never
changed. But - our bodies change and times change. The skinny eyebrows that were once de rigeur are now outre,
the big hair from last year has turned into a bob, and the blue eye shadow that you never stopped wearing is now back!
|
|
One way to find your own look is to study women of style. You've seen them. They're walking
down the street and your head turns. "What was that she was wearing?" you ask yourself. You barely had time enough
to see what was so different. The way she wore the scarf, the interesting earrings, the subtlety of the ensemble...but you
knew it was great.
Below, consider a few of the many style profiles that never seem to go away but are worn on
the backs of these women of style. Skip around if you want! Wear the classics one day and something eccentric the next. It's
all okay because fashion is entertainment. It's fun, it's interesting, it's creative and it adds to your quality
of life.
And you deserve it.

Studying the 10 Basic Style Profiles Can Help you Achieve Your Own Fashion Style
|
|
|
STYLE #1. The Chic Sophisticate: This woman
is chic, sophisticated and uptown. Her style seems to be unstudied but here are a few clues to what it takes to be this type
of woman. Fresh manicure (no chips), impeccable eyebrows, clear skin, simple hair, simple earrings, expensive shoes (yes,
expensive shoes), in fact everything that you wear must look expensive for the most part, but simple and understated. It also
helps to be an outstanding beauty.
A few Chic Sophisticates - Catherine Deneuve, Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, Jacqueline Kennedy,
Gwyneth Platrow. Designers: Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren,
Armani

STYLE #2. The
Funky Downtown Girl: This woman, generally younger, but not always,
wears clothes in unexpected ways. She's probably eclectic, mixing different styles to an intriguing effect. She combines
vintage with new and doesn't stick with one designer. Examples
of The Funky Downtown Girl: Sophia Coppola, Chloe Sevigny
Designers: Imitation of
Christ, Marc Jacobs

STYLE
#3. The Classic Beauty: She always looks beautiful and elegant. Her clothing is not always totally classic
but she is open to the use of color and accessories to accentuate her beauty. Her hair is usually glamorous and always styled.
Her makeup is soft but noticeable. Look
to Classic Beauties: Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek and Princess Di. Designers: Valentino, Emmanuel Ungaro,
Pamela Dennis.
|
|
STYLE #4. Sporty Chic: Much of the time, she's running around in athletic-inspired
outfits. Usually she's in great shape and so she can wear close-fitting hoodies, zip-up tops, nylon sweat pants and tennis
shoes.
Examples of Sporty Chic lines: Nike, Adidas, Patagonia

STYLE #5.
Rock-n-roll Girlfriend vs. Rocker:
The girlfriend usually plays
up her sexuality - a lot. She wears a lot of makeup, tight, short and see-through clothing. Her style may be eclectic, combining
leather with lace, thigh-high stockings with camouflage. The more layers the better and accessories should be layered on such
as a few scarves or many bracelets, big earrings, big hair and caps. Rocker can look very similar but generally there are fewer
accessories and probably more coverage when it comes to the clothes. A big reason is that Rocker has to play her guitar or
sing and all that clothing can be an encumbrance. Smokey eye makeup is a must.
Examples of Girlfriend: Nancy Spungen
(of Sid & Nancy), Pamela Anderson Examples
of Rocker: Madonna, Gwen Stefani, Courtney Love Designers:
Vivienne Westwood, Stephen Sprouse, Betsey Johnson, Dolce & Gabbana

STYLE #6.
Urban Mom: The Urban Mom is not to be messed with -
she is always ready for action, rarely wears high heels but clean sneakers are a must. Layering is good, a hoodie under a
jacket, jeans and t-shirt. Hair is probably up in a loose-way, just a little makeup. She sports the latest in baby gear which
includes a cool diaper bag that no one can tell is a diaper bag and a baby carriage (either the suv/double wide style), and
big sunglasses. She's usually runs in packs with other Urban Moms. Urban moms are not generally celebrities but occasionally
you might see one in a paparazzi shot.
Designers:
Juicy Couture

STYLE
#7. Ethereal
Artist: The Ethereal Artist many times is usually a pixie, she has
a bohemian and innocent look. Her look is essentially whimsical. A
few Ethereal Artists to watch: Amelie (the movie), Julia Ormond, Audrey Hepburn (the early Givenchy years), Bjork.
Designers: Prada, Issey Miyake

STYLE #8.
Fashion Eccentric: How does one describe what a Fashion Eccentric
does before she does it? Only that it's sometimes frightening, shocking, delicious, and delightful. And that is always
surprising. Inspired by fine art, particularly Surrealism and Pop Art, Fashion Eccentrics experience a new day every day.
True Fashion Eccentrics wear what they want to wear at all times, no matter where they go, or what they do. If you want to
be a Fashion Eccentric, you needn't come to this page to understand what it takes to be one. You already know.
Two Goddesses of Fashion Eccentricity: Isabella
Blow (R.I.P.), Anna Piaggi. A few designers for the Fashion Eccentrics: Rei Kawakubo, Schiaparelli, McDonalds uniforms

STYLE #9.
The Boy/Girl Girl: Boy/Girl Girls can't be confused with
being a boy although they have a certain boyishness to them. They play with having characteristics of both sexes, maybe long
hair with a man's tie and men's button-down shirt and tight jeans. They wear a sweater vest with pleated trousers
and high heels and small hoop earrings. They haven't owned a dress or worn anything truly girly since they were 10 years
old but they still look sexy. Notable examples: Patti Smith, Annie Liebowitz
Designers:
This type of independent dresser puts together her own look and has no allegiance to any particular designer.

STYLE #10.
The Powerhouse: Powerhouses dress to show their power. Usually
CEO's, in politics, or working for a T.V. network, a typical outfit is a suit, sensible heels and a blouse. Men's
shirts are not allowed. This oufit says "I am as strong as a man, but I am not a man." There are times when a softer
look is called for such as a knit-suit or an evening dress. Colors are generally grey, navy, sometimes black, and politician
red. Prints are mostly skipped. Accessories are kept small but small scarves and structured bags are important.
A few Powerhouses: Barbara Walters, Hillary Clinton, Margaret Thatcher
Designers: St.John, Tahari, Jones New York, Eileen Fisher
