We're not going to
tell you what not to wear, Advice on Fashion is going to give you advice on what to wear and give you some
suggestions on how to wear it. We all stand in front of our closets and proclaim we have nothing to wear. This is sometimes
because we don't know how to wear it, what to wear together and how to achieve a fresh look from the same old clothes.
In fashion there actually are no rules, and this is the challenge to looking good. And these days, we're all looking for
a makeover. I Don’t Have Anything to Wear We have found that many
women complain about various things about their bodies: stomach, thighs, biceps, legs, etc. But what we've noticed that
many times the only person who really notices these problems is the woman herself. We've seen that the things that these
women are complaining about are actually quite attractive. So, our advice is to take a good look at yourself in the mirror.
There are things that you might still want to change but some things cannot be changed and in that case, accept yourself as
you are and love who you are as best you can. Practice this and tomorrow you may love yourself even a little more.
What to wear or not to wear,
that is the question

So, what to wear what not to wear? Here
are some general rules to follow, or not.
|
|
THE
RULES OF FASHION:
1. When wearing necklaces, always wear them in odd numbers, such as 3 or 5. You'll see this
rule many times in vintage necklaces of the 50's where the strings came in 3's.
2. Less is more: If you're
unsure if you're overdoing it on the accessories, such as a scarf, earrings, necklace and bracelets, take one thing away.
3. Never wear white shoes after Labor Day. This is a very old rule that has been debunked by Gucci which showed
opaque black stockings with white patent leather heels in the 90's. Be careful of wearing white shoes with a white belt,
though, as you might start looking like a tourist.
4. Match your shoes with your bag. If you match them perfectly,
you look too fastidious and anal. On the other hand, if they don't coordinate in some way, you look careless.
5. Match your earrings to your necklace. Yep, old-old school. Right now, it's not fashionable to match your earrings
to your necklace. In fact, it's better to choose one or the other - great earrings or great necklace or either emphasizes
the earrings or the necklace. It is okay to coordinate. Look at least 3 pairs of earrings or at least 3 necklaces before you
make your decision if they will work together.

MORE
RULES OF FASHION:
6. Coordinate the length of your necklace with your
neckline. a. Lower neckline: either wear a choker or a long necklace that reaches at least an inch
below the neckline. b. Higher neckline: Make sure your necklace reaches a few inches below the neckline
or make it longer 7. Chandelier earrings look best with a "longer" neck and look best with clothing,
such as a lower neckline that doesn't get in the way of the earrings.
8. How to create a longer neck: I have
seen many women who don't have swan-like necks look great in longer earrings. The trick is to wear an open neckline or
a lower neckline. Most women can wear chandeliers.
9. High heels not only make you look taller, but they force
you to have better posture and they make you look thinner.
10. Wear black from head-to-toe to create a longer,
slimmer line and appear taller and more chic.
11. Play up your assets and downplay the things about yourself that
you don't love.

ANTI-RULE RULES:
1.
More is more: if you're unsure if you're overdoing it on accessories, then add some more. A great way to make a statement
is to wear a lot of necklaces or stacks of bangles. Do a lot of pins on a jacket, in fact your whole collection, if you like.
We do suggest that you stick with one collection, though - only bracelets or only necklaces and not both. Concentrate in one
area for the greatest impact - sometimes two areas can also work but three areas starts to look messy.
2. Never
make your hair look too perfect, like you stepped out of a salon. Go home and wet it down if your stylist has a tendency to
make it look too big or too perfect. This is even true if you are going up for Best Actress at the Academy Awards.
3. Sometimes clothes that look brand new look brand new. Clothes that look too "starched" look less touchable
and therefore less attractive.
4. High heels hurt sometimes. Try flats for an alternative but if looking tall
is important to you, be careful that the length and proportion of your skirt isn't too much for the size of your body.
If you need a little height, choose kitten heels (about 1 to 2" high) or flats with a little bit of a platform.
5. Platforms are now becoming classics. Some women will never give them up. They can actually be more comfortable than traditional
heels.

MORE ANTI-RULE RULES: 6. Wearing all black is expected. The last time black was a surprise was in the 80's and
that was...um, 28 years ago. Yes, black can look chic but if you wear it all the time, you'll bore your audience. If you
do wear all black, don't forget to wear fabulous accessories - that can mean many things - such as colorful scarves or
chunky jewelry or a textured big belt.
7. Sometimes the goal of fashion is not to just look thin or pretty but
also to look interesting.
8. Let's face it - a tall, thin, and young woman is highly prized. But looking thin
is not the be all and end all of fashion. Being confident in who you are and how you look can take you very far. 9. Don't try to hide your body behind an over-sized piece of clothing. It only adds more
volume. If you just skim your body, you'll look more put together and confident.
10. Be careful of buying very
inexpensive clothing. Clothing in the store can look more expensive than it is because of the quality of the sewing but there
are things that the manufacturer is skimping on: less fabric (less expensive clothing uses less fabric and sometimes it doesn't
drape well on your body as a result), quality of trims (buttons fall off or trim begins to look bad shortly after purchase),
quality of fabric (looks great in the store but after several washes, it starts to pill), and labor (clothing manufactured
in countries where labor is paid very poorly).
11. Play up your assets and ask yourself if the things you don't
love are really things that are so awful.

You've probably seen a few of the T.V.
shows that focus on helping women change their images. They snatch an unsuspecting woman off the street. Her friends and family
have put the producers up to it. She needs help, a makeover, they say! And, yes, she does. Before
I go forward with saying what might help them, I want to be clear that these women are perfectly wonderful people and worthwhile
individuals. Too many of these shows (with the exception of a couple) talk down to these women. That is not what we are here
for. We want to help if you want to be helped but we still like you as you are! That
said, what are these women (or men) who are "fashion-challenged" among us doing "wrong"? Here's a
short list: Sticking with what was fashionable when
they first started buying their own clothes. Perhaps you've seen them? A 50ish hippie who's still wearing tiered,
cotton skirts, a grandmother who still shaves her eyebrows and draws them on, a 20-something who still shows her belly button.

|
Hanging on to what looked good on them
at another space in time. The push-up bra looked good once but now her body has changed and it just doesn't
look so great anymore. Accentuating her small waist when it was small, she continues to wear wide
belts cinched tight but there's now a roll of flesh falling over the top. She's
lost weight and still wears loose clothing. Having an incomplete and sometimes nonsensical closet - it's
not well-rounded. In other words, maybe they only have track
clothes in their closet or they have no suits or suit jacket, no good coat, or they refuse to wear anything but pink.
They wear clothing that is not flattering to their bodies. Usually,
what this means is that the clothing is too large, too small, too short, too long for their own particular bodies.
Remember no one rule works for everyone. This is a topic in its own right (see our KEEPING IT IN PROPORTION page) Consider
having things shortened if you're petite or bring it in at the waist if you have a small waist, let it out if
it's too tight in a certain area.
|
|
They don't have a variety of good shoes. Even a small variety can be helpful. For many women's closets, this means
black flats, black high heels (closed-toe and open-toe or strappy), black boots, walking shoes (that are practical and look
fashionable - it is possible). I choose black because it goes with everything. Also remember if you love to wear brown, you might need to
buy a couple of pairs of brown shoes. They’re
not taking care of themselves. They throw on what's comfortable and what they think fits in with others. They don't take time
with their hair or makeup. They don't tweeze their eyebrows or maintain their nails. They don't exercise. (To be fair,
on the plus side, they may be people who help others, they do volunteer work, they love their families.) Additional word of advice: Take on one project
at a time. Don't be overwhelmed with changing a lot of things. Just one small thing can make an improvement in how you
look and how you see yourself and others see you. Check out our clothing and accessories advice page for how to make stunning and subtle changes to your look.
